Overview

The Department of Environmental Science offers two Master of Science in Environmental Science programs, one specializing in Environmental Planning and Management and another in Environmental Research, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science, all structured around core coursework in environmental science, laws and policies, impact assessment, research methodology, and statistics, followed by specialized major subjects (e.g., environmental planning, community-based management, analytical techniques, monitoring) and a broad range of electives in areas such as resource conservation, geology, climatology, pollution prevention, waste management, GIS and remote sensing, ecology, and toxicology, with each program totaling about 38 units that include graduate seminars, comprehensive examinations, and the completion and defense of either a master’s thesis or a doctoral dissertation with required residency.

Master of Science in Environmental Science Major in Environmental Planning and Management

The Master of Science in Environmental Science major in Environmental Planning and Management prepares students to address environmental problems through science‑based planning, policy, and participatory management, with emphasis on linking biophysical understanding and governance. The program includes foundation courses in environmental science, environmental laws and policies, impact assessment, research methodology, and statistics, then builds into specialized subjects on environmental planning and management, community‑based environmental management, and forest and watershed management. Students choose from a wide range of electives covering resource conservation, environmental geology, geography, ecological climatology, pollution prevention, solid and wastewater management, GIS and remote sensing, and terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecology and are required to complete a graduate seminar, comprehensive examination, and a thesis focused on applied environmental planning and management issues.
