The School of Interdisciplinary Studies (SIS) at MSU-IIT grew out of earlier efforts to offer multidisciplinary education under the Sustainable Development Studies program housed in the School of Graduate Studies, which addressed global challenges through diverse perspectives. In 2021, the university created the Center for Multidisciplinary Studies to support Sustainable Development Studies and the Master in Data Science, marking a more structured approach to integrated learning. As complex issues demanded deeper integration, this center was later transformed into the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, signaling a shift from multidisciplinary (parallel disciplines) to truly interdisciplinary education aimed at synthesizing knowledge and tackling 21st‑century problems more holistically.
